Best Bully Sticks – Great 100% Natural Chew Treats for Dogs
Maui loves to chew. In thinking about it, I have never known a dog that doesn’t like to chew. There are several reasons dogs love to chew and as good pet parents it is our job to give them a safe non-destructive outlet for their chewing needs. There are thousands of products out there, but one that is especially awesome is bully sticks. The best bully sticks are chemical free, 100% natural chew treats that your dog will love.
Why Dogs Chew
Chewing is a natural behavior for dogs, especially for puppies who use it as a way to explore their new world. Puppies and young dogs also often use chewing as a way to relieve pain associated with new teeth coming in.
Older dogs enjoy chewing I think mainly because it is just a dog’s nature, but it also helps keep their jaws strong; teeth clean; eases boredom; and can relieve mild anxiety and frustration. Some dogs also chew out of more severe behavioral issues such as separation anxiety or thunder phobia.
Giving them something that you actually WANT them to chew on will help dog and humans alike.
What Is a Bully Stick?
In preparing to write this post, I learned something! I knew that bully sticks are a 100% natural beef product and make great chew treats for dogs. What I didn’t know is that they are actually made from …. bull penises. Yes, you read that right! It may seem kind of strange, but what it means to me is that pieces of this steer or bull that might normally be discarded are being used. That’s a good thing.
Bully sticks are a single ingredient 100% natural product and come in a variety of sizes. The best bully sticks are also chemical and preservative free. This makes them a much better alternative to rawhide chews which often undergo several chemical processes before getting to your dog.
Bully sticks are also:
- easier to digest
- good for the teeth
- low in carbs and fat and high in protein
- longer lasting than other rawhide type chews
- okay for puppies
You will want to monitor how often you give your dog bully sticks as they can be fairly high in calories.
You also want to keep an eye on your dog as they chew these down. A lot of dogs just try to swallow whatever they can get down their throat. This could pose a choking hazard, so always keep an eye on your pup when they have a bully stick or any other type of chew treat.
Bully Stick Options
Bully sticks come in a variety of lengths ranging from 6 inches upward of 32 inches (did you know bulls had penises that long? I sure didn’t). They also come in a variety of thicknesses. This enables you to buy a bully stick that is the appropriate size for your dog.
You can purchase odor-free bully sticks, otherwise they can pack quite a punch when it comes to odor. Even so, once your dog starts chewing on an odor-free bully stick some of the odor will likely return.
Brands of Bully Sticks and Which Are Best
There are many different manufacturers of bully sticks and I can’t truthfully tell you which makes the absolute best bully stick. What I can recommend is that you choose a bully stick brand that does not chemically process or use preservatives, as the chemicals or preservatives used can be bad for your dog. I would also strongly recommend purchasing bully sticks made in the U.S.A.
Best Bully Sticks
A nationally known manufacturer that you should check out is Best Bully Sticks (BBS). The company was started and is owned by a husband and wife team in Virginia who wanted to provide their dogs with wholesome, 100% natural, single ingredient foods. Beef used to make their bully sticks comes from free range, grass fed bulls and is inspected and approved by the USDA and the FDA.
BBS also offer odor-free bully sticks. Bully sticks are made odor-free by drying them for a longer period of time which results in a product with nearly no moisture (moisture is the odor causing culprit). Best Bully Sticks uses no chemicals in the process of making their bully sticks odor free.
In addition to offering chemical free 100% natural dog treats, BBS makes great efforts to treat the earth with respect by using recyclable cardboard for shipping; using energy efficient lighting; using postconsumer material office furniture; and recycling.
Bully sticks are safe, natural chew treats for dogs. I have to admit that I don’t have one right now for Maui to model for you. I know she is wishing I did and I think she kind of knows that she’s getting cheated out of a little treat with this blog post. She is laying by me, and I could swear she’s pouting. Should I feel guilty?
