Blue Buffalo Training Treats – Grain Free Chewy Treats Made with Real Chicken

Do you have that one favorite snack that when you notice someone bought a new bag, your eyes light up and you get all excited about it? These Blue Buffalo training treats  – Wild Bits Chicken Recipe are that snack for Maui. Her eyes honestly get a bit wider when she sees this bag come out and when she tastes these little chicken bits. I do believe these grain free chewy treats are her happy place.

Little Morsels

We all know Blue Buffalo, they are a mega player in the pet food business. But among all of their foods and treats these soft chewy dog treats might go unnoticed. Not because they are not worthy, but because they are in such a darn little bag. Not totally unexpected that they are in a small bag, as the treats themselves are each quite small.

These Blue Buffalo Wilderness Wild Bits are labeled as training treats and treats used for this purpose are generally smaller in size since dogs may often get quite a lot of them while training. Here’s a photo of a treat next to a dime so you have a size comparison.

Blue Wilderness

The Blue Buffalo Wilderness product line is grain-free and high in protein. Their website states Blue Wilderness is “Inspired by the diet of wolves, true omnivores whose endurance is legendary, BLUE Wilderness is a protein-rich, grain-free food that contains more of the delicious meat dogs love.” Wondering if this means these treats will give Maui a little more endurance? Probably not but she thinks they are delicious anyway!

What’s in Them

The bag boasts some pretty nice things. These grain free chewy treats contain:

  • deboned chicken which is a great source of protein
  • DHA which supports a puppy’s eye health and cognitive growth
  • Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids which help dogs have healthy skin and shiny coats

Actual ingredient list

Deboned Chicken, potatoes, chickpeas, maple syrup, vegetable glycerine, gelatin, salt, flaxseed (source of Omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids), natural smoke flavor, fish oil (source of DHA-Docosahexaenoic Acid), preserved with phosphoric acid, sorbic acid, citric acid and mixed tocopherols, oil of rosemary.

Sorbic acid, citric acid, and mixed tocopherols are all naturally occurring ingredients but phosphoric acid is not and  although it is considered harmless, it is a bit of a controversial ingredient.

Phosphoric acid is way at the bottom of the ingredient list (meaning there is less of it in there than the items above it) and are these treats so small I would beg to think the amount of phosphoric acid ingested is nearly negligible.

Each little chicken training treat has 5 Kcals. This doesn’t sound like much but again, when you start feeding a lot of them the calories add up. It’s good to adjust the amount of regular food your dog gets when you’re feeding treats during the day. More treats during the day means a little less regular dog food at mealtime.

Winner, Winner

Golden retriever - Blue Buffalo wilderness while bitsYou already know that Maui absolutely loves these treats. I wish I could capture for you the look in her eyes when she tastes one. Her eyes get a little bigger and it seems a little brighter. I got her to pose with them, but it sure wasn’t an easy job because she’d rather eat them and hold them!

Note to self – have Maui pose with the bag BEFORE cracking the seal. Maui gives a paws way up for these Blue Buffalo training treats – Wild Bits Chicken Recipe!

Leave Maui a note below and let her know how much your pup loves these treats!

Lynne and Maui

  • I love Maui! What a beautiful Golden! I like how you use Maui on your site; it’s a nice touch. As for the treats, I think they’re a goldmine, too. Blue Buffalo has a good name in the pet food industry, so it’s no wonder why they’re so popular.

Great post and even better information. Thanks!

      Hi Thomas,
Maui says thank you and thank you for visiting our site! She absolutely loves these Buffalo treats and couldn’t wait for me to open the bag for her after posing for the picture. Thanks for your comment and we wish you the best.

  • Wow Maui is such a Good girl! She looks like my gold retriever Molly a lot. These Blue Buffalo treats are really a good treat. Molly has been cooperating a lot and sitting, giving me her “hand” (that’s how I call it ahah) and almost doing a complete roll without jumping to get the snack bag from my hand 🙂
Great post and i am grateful for the info.
    Best Regards,
    Daniel Fernandes
