Blue Buffalo boo bars imageEverything’s turning up pumpkin!

Fall has definitely made an early entrance here in Minnesota. Temperatures are cooler, leaves are changing, and pumpkin flavored everything (nearly) can be found! The coffee shops all have their specialty pumpkin spice drinks available and yes, the pumpkin spice dog treats are available now, too!

Last week we talked about Greenies Pumpkin Spice Dental Treats and today Maui gets to try out the Blue Buffalo Boo Bars Limited Edition crunchy dog biscuits! Just in time for Halloween! Not only are they made with yummy pumpkin, but they are scary fun Halloween shapes!

It is super boosome that Chewy.com let Maui try these free of charge in exchange for her (and my) honest review of the product.

Blue Buffalo Boo Bars

Far be it from Blue Buffalo to be scared away from hitting the market with a limited edition Halloween dog treat! The fun Halloween design on the bag lets you know that these special pumpkin and cinnamon crunchy dog biscuits will likely not be around past All Hallows’ Eve (if they are, you might find them with a nice big discount).

Boo Bars only come in one flavor, which is the pumpkin and cinnamon. These treats are baked to a crunchy perfection for your furry, four-legged family members so they too can have a special treat while all the hooman kids anticipate their candy.

Boo Bars Howling Good Ingredients

These holistic dog biscuits are made from a howling good recipe with wholesome, natural, nutritious ingredients.

The top ingredients in these mini dog biscuits are:

  • Oatmeal
  • Barley
  • Oat flour
  • Pumpkin
  • Flaxseed
  • Cane molasses
  • Carrots
  • Salt
  • Cinnamon

The remaining ingredients are a natural preservative, oil of rosemary, and ingredients that provide calcium, vitamin C, and vitamin E.

A great thing about these crunchy dog treats is that they contain no chicken or poultry by-product meals! This is perfect for your dog if they have an allergy or sensitivity to chicken or poultry.

These bars also have no wheat, corn, soy, or artificial colors or preservatives! These ingredients can also be a problem if your dog has an allergy or sensitivity to them.

Pumpkin Is Good for Your Dog

We know that pumpkin is great for pies, bars, cookies, and of course roasting the seeds, but pumpkin is also great for your dog!

These treats probably don’t have enough pumpkin in them to make a huge difference to your dog’s diet, but just letting you know as an FYI, pumpkin can be a great food to feed your dog for several reasons!

Digestion:

Crazy as this may sound, pumpkin is a great food to give your dog if they have diarrhea or are constipated! It can help either one!

Urinary Health:

The natural oils in pumpkin seeds and pumpkin flesh are believed to help support a healthy urinary tract.

Skin and Coat:

Pumpkin seeds are high in antioxidants and essential fatty acids so they can help your dog have a shiny healthy coat and healthy skin.

Weight Loss:

Pumpkin is high in fiber so replacing a portion of their regular food at meal time with an equal amount of pumpkin can help them feel full but take in fewer calories.

Ingredient Sourcing at Blue Buffalo

Many of us are concerned with where pet food companies source ingredients used in our dog’s food and treats. I could not find anywhere on the BlueBuffalo.com website where they indicate the source of their ingredients but their website does say:

We work with only U.S. partners to manufacture our products according to our recipes and specifications. Product quality is our #1 priority. We have strict controls in place to make sure that our ingredients meet the highest quality standards.

How Many Calories Are in These Treats And How Big Are They?

Blue Buffalo indicates these little biscuits have 20 calories each.

The treats come in a few different Halloween inspired shapes but all are generally slightly bigger than a quarter, as you can see in this picture.

Blue Buffalo boo bars size

You’ll probably have to cut or break them into smaller pieces if you have a smaller dog.

If you’re anything like me, I tend to give Maui more than one treat at a time. I probably sound like a broken record but remember to decrease the amount of food you give your dog at mealtime if you give them a few of these treats during the day. Four of these treats add up to an extra 80 calories, and over time that adds up to extra pounds around the belly.

Things That Make Blue Buffalo Special

The Blue Buffalo Company has their Blue Buffalo Foundation. This foundation has:

  1. Raised over $2.5 million for pet cancer research and treatment. These funds go directly to universities conducting cutting-edge research into treatment and cures for pet cancer. In addition, funds also go to help pet parents fund the treatment needed for their pets with cancer.
  2. Awarded over $87,000 in scholarships to veterinary medicine students at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine.
  3. Partnered with the Animal Cancer Foundation to start the Canine Cancer Genome Project. This project will map common canine tumor genomes in search of critical information that can benefit pets and potentially humans with the same disease.

How Much Are Boo Bars and Where Can You Get Them?

Blue Buffalo is one of the biggest pet food companies in the world. That being said, you can find their products pretty much everywhere. Whether or not your local pet store or supermarket will have the Boo Bars, I cannot say.

Some retailers that do carry the Blue Buffalo Boo Bars, along with their prices are:

Chewy.com currently has them on sale for $3.99 a bag!

Target and PetSmart also have them on sale right now for $3.99 a bag!

Not knowing how long this frightfully good deal will last, you might want to snatch some up before the goblins take them all away!

What are People Saying?

Dogs are loving them!

Pros and Cons from Chewy.com Customers:

Pros

  • Don’t make her dog itch
  • Smell amazing
  • Dogs love them
  • Good price
  • Good ingredients
  • Fun shapes

Cons

  • A few picky eaters did not like them
  • Made one dog gassy

Maui’s Final Decision

Maui was more than frightfully happy to gobble down a few of the Blue Buffalo Boo Bars! She was all in and gives these treats 2 paws up!

Mom (me) overall gives them a 7.5/10 for lack of transparency in ingredient sourcing but a 10/10 for cuteness and the joy Maui gets from eating them!

  • Lynne,

Brrr! As a fellow Minnesotan I totally hear you on the cold! I just let our 12-week old puppy outside and we both wanted to come back in right away!

With all the healthy ingredients these treats contain, I think a “hooman” could eat them, too! But I don’t think the kiddies would consider it a “treat” to find it in their candy bag!

I do have a question. Do you think these treats can be given to our 12-week old pup? He is a Daucshaund and Black Lab mix that we recently adopted. He has the short legs and long body of the wiener dog and the black color and playfulness of the lab. I just want to be sure that they don’t have things in them that he shouldn’t eat at that age.

The price sure is right and I think I will be getting some after I hear back from you! My granddaughter is all about Halloween and decorating and her dog, Max! So I know she will love getting them for him!

    • Hi Karin, how did you like the mid October snow this past weekend? These treats are intended for dogs of all ages so yes, they would be appropriate for your 12 week old puppy. Chewy.com has a great deal on them right now at only $3.99 per bag! Maui loves them and she is sure that your dog as well as Max will love them too!

      • Lynne,

I wasn’t very fond of the mid-October snow! I am not a fan of snow anymore so having it come this early really did not make my day! But it didn’t last long for me anyway.

I am glad to hear that the treats will be good for my puppy. He loves getting his treats as rewards when he does what is expected, like going outside to go potty!

I will take Maui’s approval rating and be purchasing these for my little guy!

  • Thanks for this great information! I’m always looking for new treats to spoil my Beagle Buddy with:)

He loves to eat, and these Boo Bars sound like a healthy, yummy way for him to celebrate one of my personal favorite holidays. It’s always helpful to take a few moments to learn about the ingredients that go into these dog snacks. For instance, I had no idea Pumpkin was so beneficial for our furry friends. The company sounds solid and reputable as well, which makes me feel better about purchasing this product.

    All The Best,

    Mark

    • Hi Mark, Halloween is one of our favorite holidays as well! Pumpkin is really great for dogs. Weird that it can help them both when I have constipation or diarrhea, but cool as well! Blue Buffalo is one of the top pet industry companies in the world so you’re safe buying one of their products! Thanks much for stopping by!

  • Hey Lynne 😉

This is a very cute doggo on this picture! is it Yours? Looks lovely! Anyway, back to the topic 😀 I will start off by saying that these pumpkin spice dog treats have very cool design and definitely bring that halloween vibes and atmosphere to home 😀 I really like those pumpkin shaped ones, they look awesome!

I am very glad to hear that Blue Buffalo Company created this product because they are very well known and high quality company which truly care about delivering best food for pets. I appreciate that You included some interesting facts about Blue Buffalo Company, I didn’t know that they raised over 2.5 million dollars for pet cancer research and partnered up with ”Animal Cancer Foundation to start the Canine Cancer Genome Project”, wow- great stuff!

Going into this article I was also very curious how pumpking themselves affect pet’s health in general, and thankfully You have made it very clear for me that pumkins are good for our fellow furry friends! I was quite surprised to learn that pumpkins have such great health benefits for pets and are able to improve digestion, urinary health, skin health and more! I truly learned a lot of new and interesting things today, thank You so much and keep up the good work 😉

    Cheers,

    Evald

    • Hi Evald, Thank you so much for such an amazing comment! Yes, the picture is my girl, Maui! It’s really her blog I just type things out for her 😉 Blue Buffalo is an amazing company and has been around for really long time. They do a lot of great things for animals in need and the organizations that help them. Thank you so much for stopping by and we hope you come back again 🙂

  • Sounds like a really good treat for the dogs, and they carry some real health benefits – so it’s all good!

They’re obviously concerned about delivering on the highest quality standards which is reassuring. It looks like these treats are very popular on Amazon, so that kinda proves they live up to their claims and our doggy chums love them.

Will be giving them a  try for sure. Thanks!

    • Hi Les, Blue Buffalo is super concerned with providing high quality  ingredients in all of the foods and treats they make. They are super popular on Amazon and around the world! So glad your doggy Chums loves blue Buffalo! Let Maui know what he thinks of the Boo Bars!

  • Those sounds so healthy and good for our fur babies.  My dog – Brooklyn, LOVES everything pumpkin.  Do you know if they will be available in Canada? I will check out chewy and petsmart online to see if they are.I know she would love them.  She also has a lot of urinary issues (TCC) and I have her back on estrogen for a leaking bladder.  Do you recommend any other dogs treats that help with urinary issues?

    • Hi Nikki, Well if you have access to Chewy.com then they are definitely available in Canada! Chewy is having a great sale on them right now to do so would be a great time to grab a bag or two! I don’t know of any other dog treats that help with urinary issues. Since pumpkin does help with that pumpkin flavored treats might help but I’m not sure the little bit of pumpkin that’s in a dog treat would make a significant difference. Pumpkin at higher concentrations, like if you were to put a couple blobs on your dog’s food might be enough to help with urinary issues. But, I don’t have a veterinary background so you might want to check with your veterinarian on that one 🙂 Thanks so much for stopping by and we hope you come back again!

  • Hey there! These treats look delicious and I’m glad to know that they are also really good for my dog. I will be getting her a bag for Halloween. I also love the design and am always glad to support companies that support the community. Thanks for including that part as I feel that it is important that we support each other in every way possible. In other words, I know that by buying this product I’m helping someone get a scholarship or someone’s pet is being treated for cancer, etc.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Marlinda

    • Hello Marlinda, Thanks for checking out another one of our posts! It is a really nice feeling knowing that by doing something we would do anyway (buying a bag of Blue Buffalo) we are helping animals in need and may be helping a student with their education. Please let us know if your pupper likes the treats! Maui says she loves them and she also says woof!

  • I’ve been looking for some new treats for my sister’s dogs. Her dog just had puppies. Her dog is a Chihuahua. Will these treats work for smaller dogs?

Do you know if these will work for puppies, too?

    • Hi Garen, these treats are a little bit bigger, generally bigger than a quarter. For a Chihuahua, I think it would be best to break these little biscuits into smaller more manageable bite-size pieces. Chewy.com indicates these treats are for dogs and puppies of all ages. Let us know if your sisters dogs and puppies like them 🙂

  • Hi Lynne!

How could a dog not love these! They sound so good I wanted one for myself! My friend walks dogs for Rover. I think I’ll get her some for her favorite canine friends!

    Thanks for another great post!

    • Hi Steven, These little mini biscuits really do look like yummy little cookies! If you were to put them on a plate I can’t imagine any of us humans hesitating to gobble one down. I have not tasted one yet though! Thanks for stopping by and that would be wonderful if you gifted your friend with the bag of these tasty pumpkin treats! All of her Rover friends will thank you!

  • Thanks for this. I had never knew you could get halloween dog treats and it is great that they are healthy too. Not sure the trick or treaters would be happy with healthy snacks but it is great that our dogs can be!!

    • Hi Chris, Maui loves these so in her eyes I’m sure she has the upper hand over those kids who will be getting candy! Thanks for stopping by and we hope to see you visit often!

  • I love Blue Buffalo and am pretty picky on what I feed my dogs. They both love pumpkin, but one does not like cookie type treats. I am going to give these a try. Since he loves pumpkin, maybe he will eat these? I know that pumpkin is really good for dogs actually, and I would like him to like these treats lol. Thanks for sharing!

    • Hi, Maui is a pretty non-discriminant treat eater. She loves all treats, but I can tell from her behavior and the look in her eyes when some are extra yummy. These are extra yummy! Let us know if your non-cookie lover enjoys these treats.

  • Hi and thank you for this interesting and informative article.

I had not heard of this product before now so thank you for building my awareness. I have a friend that I know would love this product so thank you
    Jennifer
