Scary Halloween Blue Buffalo Boo Bars with Pumpkin!
Fall has definitely made an early entrance here in Minnesota. Temperatures are cooler, leaves are changing, and pumpkin flavored everything (nearly) can be found! The coffee shops all have their specialty pumpkin spice drinks available and yes, the pumpkin spice dog treats are available now, too!
Last week we talked about Greenies Pumpkin Spice Dental Treats and today Maui gets to try out the Blue Buffalo Boo Bars Limited Edition crunchy dog biscuits! Just in time for Halloween! Not only are they made with yummy pumpkin, but they are scary fun Halloween shapes!
It is super boosome that Chewy.com let Maui try these free of charge in exchange for her (and my) honest review of the product.
Blue Buffalo Boo Bars
Far be it from Blue Buffalo to be scared away from hitting the market with a limited edition Halloween dog treat! The fun Halloween design on the bag lets you know that these special pumpkin and cinnamon crunchy dog biscuits will likely not be around past All Hallows’ Eve (if they are, you might find them with a nice big discount).
Boo Bars only come in one flavor, which is the pumpkin and cinnamon. These treats are baked to a crunchy perfection for your furry, four-legged family members so they too can have a special treat while all the hooman kids anticipate their candy.
Boo Bars Howling Good Ingredients
These holistic dog biscuits are made from a howling good recipe with wholesome, natural, nutritious ingredients.
The top ingredients in these mini dog biscuits are:
- Oat flour
- Cane molasses
The remaining ingredients are a natural preservative, oil of rosemary, and ingredients that provide calcium, vitamin C, and vitamin E.
A great thing about these crunchy dog treats is that they contain no chicken or poultry by-product meals! This is perfect for your dog if they have an allergy or sensitivity to chicken or poultry.
These bars also have no wheat, corn, soy, or artificial colors or preservatives! These ingredients can also be a problem if your dog has an allergy or sensitivity to them.
Pumpkin Is Good for Your Dog
We know that pumpkin is great for pies, bars, cookies, and of course roasting the seeds, but pumpkin is also great for your dog!
These treats probably don’t have enough pumpkin in them to make a huge difference to your dog’s diet, but just letting you know as an FYI, pumpkin can be a great food to feed your dog for several reasons!
Crazy as this may sound, pumpkin is a great food to give your dog if they have diarrhea or are constipated! It can help either one!
The natural oils in pumpkin seeds and pumpkin flesh are believed to help support a healthy urinary tract.
Skin and Coat:
Pumpkin seeds are high in antioxidants and essential fatty acids so they can help your dog have a shiny healthy coat and healthy skin.
Pumpkin is high in fiber so replacing a portion of their regular food at meal time with an equal amount of pumpkin can help them feel full but take in fewer calories.
Ingredient Sourcing at Blue Buffalo
Many of us are concerned with where pet food companies source ingredients used in our dog’s food and treats. I could not find anywhere on the BlueBuffalo.com website where they indicate the source of their ingredients but their website does say:
We work with only U.S. partners to manufacture our products according to our recipes and specifications. Product quality is our #1 priority. We have strict controls in place to make sure that our ingredients meet the highest quality standards.
How Many Calories Are in These Treats And How Big Are They?
Blue Buffalo indicates these little biscuits have 20 calories each.
The treats come in a few different Halloween inspired shapes but all are generally slightly bigger than a quarter, as you can see in this picture.
You’ll probably have to cut or break them into smaller pieces if you have a smaller dog.
If you’re anything like me, I tend to give Maui more than one treat at a time. I probably sound like a broken record but remember to decrease the amount of food you give your dog at mealtime if you give them a few of these treats during the day. Four of these treats add up to an extra 80 calories, and over time that adds up to extra pounds around the belly.
Things That Make Blue Buffalo Special
The Blue Buffalo Company has their Blue Buffalo Foundation. This foundation has:
- Raised over $2.5 million for pet cancer research and treatment. These funds go directly to universities conducting cutting-edge research into treatment and cures for pet cancer. In addition, funds also go to help pet parents fund the treatment needed for their pets with cancer.
- Awarded over $87,000 in scholarships to veterinary medicine students at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine.
- Partnered with the Animal Cancer Foundation to start the Canine Cancer Genome Project. This project will map common canine tumor genomes in search of critical information that can benefit pets and potentially humans with the same disease.
How Much Are Boo Bars and Where Can You Get Them?
Blue Buffalo is one of the biggest pet food companies in the world. That being said, you can find their products pretty much everywhere. Whether or not your local pet store or supermarket will have the Boo Bars, I cannot say.
Some retailers that do carry the Blue Buffalo Boo Bars, along with their prices are:
Chewy.com currently has them on sale for $3.99 a bag!
Not knowing how long this frightfully good deal will last, you might want to snatch some up before the goblins take them all away!

Maui’s Final Decision
Maui was more than frightfully happy to gobble down a few of the Blue Buffalo Boo Bars! She was all in and gives these treats 2 paws up!
Mom (me) overall gives them a 7.5/10 for lack of transparency in ingredient sourcing but a 10/10 for cuteness and the joy Maui gets from eating them!
