Eating the exact same thing every day for breakfast and dinner has got to get boring! We, humans, get to choose what we eat every day for our meals and snacks, but our dogs just get to eat whatever it is we get them. That’s kind of a bad deal for them.

Luckily in recent years, dog food toppers and dog food mixers have become quite a popular thing! These dog food toppers and mixers are often made with real meat, fruits, and vegetables and are meant to be mixed with your dog’s regular dry or wet food. Talk about an awesome spruce up!

Today we’re going to talk about Stella & Chewy’s Meal Mixer SuperBlends! Awesome blends of freeze-dried raw meat in freeze-dried, nutrient-rich superfoods like strawberries, bananas, and blueberries!

Stella & Chewy’s Meal Mixer SuperBlends

These dog food toppers are each made up of 90% raw freeze-dried meat. SuperBlends mixers come in four recipe varieties:

  • Cage-free chicken
  • Cage-free chicken for small breed dogs
  • Grass-fed beef
  • Cage-free duck and goose

Stella & Chewy’s creates these drool-ishious dog food toppers by mixing their original 95% raw meat Meal Mixers with a special blend of 100% organic vegetables and fruit!

About the Meat

The majority of the ingredients in the SuperBlends Meal Mixers are Stella & Chewy’s ‘regular’ Meal Mixers which are made from 95% meat, organs, and bone.

All raw freeze-dried proteins used in the Meal Mixers and SuperBlends are cage free, grass fed, and wild caught or farm raised. The proteins they use also have no added hormones or antibiotics!

Stella & Chewy’s obtains their meat proteins only from ranchers and farmers they trust. They are very transparent in where they obtained their animal proteins as can be seen from this clip from their website.

About the Fruit

Stella & Chewy Super Blends mixes in certified organic bananas, strawberries, and blueberries!

Their website indicates they only obtain ingredients

“sourced from farmers and ranchers that are recognized for their superior, human-grade quality ingredients and highest levels of food handling safety”.

Ingredients from China?

It seems dog food ingredients sourced from China are always getting a bad rap, but not without cause. China has had more than its fair number of food scandals. For this reason, consumers are often highly concerned about ingredients sourced from China.

So, to let you know …

Stella & Chewy’s indicates they source none of their ingredients from China!

Food Safety

Stella & Chewy's product safety testingStella & Chewy’s makes big efforts to source only high-quality, nutritious, wholesome, and safe ingredients. If you’re curious about your products safety testing, you can look it up on their website!

Enter the lot number of your product in the spot found in the upper right-hand corner of your website and you will be able to see the full product safety testing report from that product! I’ve never seen any other company as transparent and forthcoming with food safety information!

How to Feed

What is interesting about this dog food topper is you have the option of using it as a topper (an extra scrumptious bonus to your dog’s regular food) or as their entire meal!

Stella & Chewy's how to feed meal mixers

As a Dog Food Topper

Their website states to measure out a ¼ cup of the SuperBlends Meal Mixer; add it to your dog’s regular diet; mix it up, and serve.

Personally, I think the amount that you add will depend on the size of your dog. If you have a tiny little dog that only eats ½ a cup of food at a time (or something like that) adding ¼ cup of additional food onto that is an awful lot!

As a Complete and Balanced Meal

Stella & Chewy’s recommends rehydrating the super blends meal mixer in order to use it as their whole meal.

You can do this by adding 2 tablespoons warm water per ¼ cup of meal mixer.

Here is a feeding chart from their website for the cage-free chicken recipe SuperBlends Meal Mixers.

Calories, Calories, Calories

These meal mixers have a decent number of calories in them.

The website refers to a scoop as a ¼ cup, so with this in mind:

  • Cage-free chicken recipe = 60 cal/scoop
  • Cage-free chicken recipe for small breed dogs – 60 cal/scoop
  • Grass-fed beef recipe = 75 cal/scoop
  • Cage-free duck and goose recipe – 70 cal/scoop

An extra 60 – 70 calories for a large or extra-large dog probably wouldn’t amount to much, but for a small dog, that’s a lot of calories!

Be sure to decrease the amount of regular kibble or wet food you give your dog to compensate for the extra calories added by the dog food topper.

  • Hi, Lynne. Although I have never heard of dog food like stella&chewy;’s meal mixers, I know that this is a good option for pets, not just food in pet stores. Pets sometimes try to mix food and have different effects on growing up and responsiveness. You also mentioned the ingredients of the fruit in the article, the safety of pet food and the importance and adjustment of heat to pet food. These are the processes that should be paid attention to when making good mixed pet food. A very nice article about pet food, thanks for sharing.

    • Hi Tee, Thank you so much for stopping by! It is really important to pay attention to how the pet food is made as well as the ingredients. Very good point! Thank you so much for stopping by and we hope to see you again 🙂

  • Hey Lynne. I’m a dog lover and this is the first time I’ve come to know about these meal mixer. I have always kept my dog away from packaged food, thinking that they all contain artificial food. Yes it is true that sometimes dogs need variety of food and the product you have mentioned could be a great alternative to fresh meat I provide them. Thanks for sharing this knowledge.

    • Hi Sourabh, in today’s pet industry there are baton of healthy, natural, nutritious foods that do not have a lot or any artificial ingredients. Stella & Chewy’s is a company that prides themselves on providing healthy wholesome foods for pets. Check it out and let us know what you think! Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  • These are so cool. I do agree with you that our poor babies don’t have the choice like we humans do to choose our meals. They have to eat those boring dry foods every single day and its kinda of sad thinking about it. I love this idea of having raw meat and dried fruit mixed in their food.. What a great idea. I will have to check these out better, Thank you!

    • Hi Andrea, there are so many more options available for our dogs today than there were saying, back when I was growing up. Dogs got their kibble and may be a bone now and then, and that was it. These dog food toppers offer a great, super healthy way to give our dog a little variety to their diet. Please let us know if you grab a bag for your dog. Maui would love to know what you think!

  • I know a lot of people are leaning more towards raw diets. I have always found them to be a little complicated or rather they sound complicated. Buying the food, prepping, figuring out portions, figuring out proper nutritional needs and if added supplements are needed, etc.

I had no idea though there was a raw product that is basically ready to use and freeze-dried! That is really neat. I have researched raw diets over the years, but for some reason have never heard of this. Thank you for sharing!

    • Hi Lynn, Feeding a raw diet is so easy today. You can certainly choose to buy all the ingredients and prepare it on your own but you can buy these dog food toppers to put on your dogs kibble or if you want to go all out raw you can buy raw dog food already prepared. Thank you for stopping by!

  • I’ve seen these in passing but just thought it was another brand of dog food. I didn’t know you mix it in with your dog’s food. Seems like a cool idea to give a little bit of variety. Some people have to be careful though because their dog’s don’t do well with switching up flavors/brands and such. But this is still a eat idea if your dog can handle it!

    • Hi Ash, Yes, you are right about some dogs not tolerating a switch in food very well. Since this is just a topper and you had just a little bit, and hopefully it wouldn’t cause a problem. If you have a dog with a sensitive stomach or one that you know doesn’t tolerate change very well, probably just using a very tiny bit to start would be a good idea. Thank you so much for stopping by!

  • So many varieties! I was not aware about this brand. I like that the products contain a high percentage of meat compare with other products.
I’ll try to find the products on our local market.
Thank you for an informative review.

    • Hi Dany, Some dog food toppers and inclusions are really amazingly great products! Another one I reviewed (Sojos) contained only freeze-dried meat! Nothing artificial in either of these so they are great, wholesome additions to your dogs’ diet! If you can’t find it in your local market my guess is you could certainly find it in a local pet store! Thank you so much for stopping by and Maui says woof!

  • I have not heard of this meal mixer. My dogs eat their dry food mixed with canned chicken and veggies, along with fruit that I chop up for them. They need variety just like we do. This looks like a great solution. Sounds like it will be easier all around for me to add this instead of the canned meat and veggies and chopped fruit. I see that this is freeze dried which I kind of like, because I have bought other “fresh” meal mixers and right from the fridge at the store it just did not smell the best. I would add water to this right?

    • Hi! Sounds like what you’ve been giving your dog is great quality food as well! Sometimes canned meats have added salt so you want to keep an eye out for that. If you want to use the Stella & Chewy’s Meal Mixers as a meal topper you do not need to add water. If you’d like to use it as their entire meal, the website recommends adding a little bit of water. You can learn more here https://www.stellaandchewys.com/dog-food/meal-mixer-superblends/grass-fed-beef . Just scroll down to where you see the feeding instructions. Thank you so much for stopping back!
