It has been quite some time since I’ve had to contact you with positive news about a dog treat recall, so that is a welcome change. However, I do have one for you today despite the fact that I’m sorry. This one comes from a fairly well-known firm, the likes of which provide sweets that are likely to be available pretty much everywhere.
Merrick Pet Care, which has its headquarters in Amarillo, Texas, has voluntarily recalled both its Merrick Backcountry treats and their Castor & Pollux Good Buddy treats, working in conjunction with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These tasty morsels may have increased amounts of a beef thyroid hormone that occurs naturally in meat since they include beef.
This recall of dog treats was prompted by a complaint from a customer. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had received a complaint from a customer about a dog whose health had been momentarily affected adversely as a result of consuming the Merrick Backcountry Great Plains Real Beef Jerky 4.5 ounce. The moment the owner stopped giving the dog treats, the canine’s health began to drastically improve, eventually leading to a complete recovery.
The FDA informed Merrick about the complaint that was filed. Merrick has voluntarily recalled any treats that may have been contaminated in order to protect the well-being of the dogs owned by its customers.
Although I was unable to locate any information to that effect, I am certain that Merrick sent representative samples of the tainted dog treats to a laboratory for analysis in order to ascertain the reason why the dog got sick. That makes perfect logic, wouldn’t you say? Unless, of course, they just concluded that since the snacks were made of beef, the cause may be possibly high amounts of thyroid hormone in beef… but to make such an assumption would be quite arrogant.
Merrick ordered this voluntary recall of a limited number of batches of treats containing beef since there was a possibility that they had increased amounts of a naturally occurring cow thyroid. It is unknown how they discovered this, but they did. My best assumption is that the meat utilized in all of the products being recalled originated from the same vendor.
As of right now, there have not been any other incidences of sickness attributed to the treats that have been recorded.
The following list contains the production codes (UPC codes) that are impacted by this recall:
This voluntary recall does not impact any other items manufactured by either Merrick or Castor & Pollux.
You may find the production codes at the very bottom of the bag of goodies, which is placed on the back of the bag. The following photographs, taken from the website Merrickpetcare.com, illustrate what each bag seems to be like as well as the location of the manufacturing (UPC) code.
The concerned treats, which were manufactured by Merrick Backcountry and Castor & Pollux Good Buddy, were sold in the United States over the internet, in grocery stores, and at specialized merchants. Additionally, a restricted quantity of them were sold in the country of Canada.
The following symptoms may be brought on as a result of eating beef thyroid:
If used over an extended length of time, the signs and symptoms will most likely become more severe and include the following:
In the event that your dog has consumed any of the contaminated goods and is displaying any of the aforementioned symptoms, you should get in touch with your vet as soon as possible.
You are required, of course, to discontinue giving your dog these goodies (but set the bag aside so you can return them to get your money back).
Merrick has suggested that you may contact them at 1-800-664-7387 between the hours of 8 AM and 5 PM Central Time Monday through Friday or at any time through email at customerservice@Merrickpetcare.com if you bought one of the impacted lots of the treats mentioned above.
They will provide you with instructions on how to proceed in order to get your money returned to you.

Merrick initiated this voluntary recall to ensure that their customers’ pets are protected from any potential harm. They have indicated that the highest standards of quality and safety are being maintained, and they are actively cooperating with the FDA in connection to this recall. To paraphrase what may be seen on Merrick website.
“Because our firm is made up of people who own pets and like them, we are well aware that our customers put a great deal of faith in us when they give our goods to their animals. Our organization places a high premium on ensuring the highest possible standard of both product quality and consumer wellbeing. We truly regret any difficulty and worries that this voluntary recall may have caused for our retail clients and consumers, and we offer our apologies for this. On this voluntary recall, we are collaborating with the Food and Drug Administration of the United States, and we will provide them with our full cooperation.
In addition, Merrick reminds everyone that these snacks are not supposed to make up the majority of a dog’s diet and that they should only be given to the dog on occasion as a special treat.
