Merrick Fresh Kisses Dental Chews for Dogs | Great For Clean Teeth and Fresh Breath!

Who doesn't like kisses? Especially when they are fresh kisses!

I think one of the fun things about having a dog is all the little kisses ( or big slobbery ones if you have a big dog)! Dogs are so willing to give unconditional love and affection. It's one of the most endearing qualities about them.

Unfortunately some of our dogs don't have the best breath and getting those loving dog kisses can be a little less than pleasant. Sweet kisses but bad breath!

There are several dental chews out there for dogs to help keep your dog's teeth clean.

Today we are going to see what Maui and Emma think of the Merrick Fresh Kisses All Natural Double-Brush dental chews. Yes, I said double-brush!

Not only will these dental chews help keep your dog's teeth clean they will also give your dog fresher breath!

Let's check them out!

The Merrick Company

I love the Merrick company because it was started by just a normal guy wanting to make great treats for his dog.

The company started in 1988 with the simple single natural treat called the Flossie. It ended up being a hit at trade shows and the company has done nothing but grow from that point on!

“Our faith, family, and country have always been at the core of what our company is about.

It was true when we started, and it’s still the same today.”

Merrick's Five-Star Promises

As a company of integrity Merrick policies you five things:

  • they use local growers for fresh produce and meats
  • they use whole foods - no added sweeteners, preservatives, colors or other unnecessary additives
  • foods are cooked in their kitchen located in Texas
  • their foods offer balanced high-quality nutrition
  • they offer "better food for better health"

Fresh Kisses Dental Treats

Fresh Kisses treats for dogs were formulated and designed with two purposes in mind -

  1. to clean your dog's teeth
  2. to give your dog fresher breath

Item number 1 is obviously very important to your dog's health but I would say 2 will also improve your daily life! You know what I mean if your dog has ever come up and breathed directly in your face!

Fresh kisses are available in two recipes. One is infused with coconut & botanical oils and the other recipe is infused with mint flavored breath strips!

Unique Design Cleans Teeth Better

At first glance, you may think that the Merrick Fresh Kisses looks similar to another brand of dental treat (yeah, the Greenies) but the Fresh Kisses have a unique design that enables them to clean your dog's teeth a little bit better.

Fresh kisses are designed as a double brush. They have a little toothbrush shape at each end of the treat so as your dog chews, those little toothbrush nubs get in there and give your dog's teeth a better clean.

Fresh Kisses Coconut & Botanical Oils Recipe

For being part of the Chewy influencer program Maui and Emma had the opportunity to try the Fresh Kisses free of charge in exchange for their (and my) honest opinion of the product.

We chose the coconut & botanical oils recipe.

The Fresh Kisses come in four different sizes -

Fresh kisses dental treats sizes

Since Emma is about 20 pounds and Maui is about 60 pounds I opted for the medium-size - trying to hit the in between. Maui has a tendency to easily put on weight so I often tend to get a smaller sized treat than is recommended for her weight anyway.

Taste Testing

Wow, I don't think I've ever seen a dog so excited to taste a treat before! I thought Emma was about to lose her mind waiting while was taking a couple product photos!

Emma suffered through having to wait to taste her Fresh Kisses while I tried to get them both settled to pose for a "with the treats" photo. This took way longer than I expected because Emma could not contain herself! I actually can't believe I got her to sit still long enough for a photo and she didn't go ahead and steal the dental treat while I was futzing around with my phone. What a good girl!

I could definitely smell the coconut as they ate their Fresh Kisses! This flavor recipe has peppermint oil as an ingredient and I can definitely smell the mint!

Coming out of the bag they didn't really have a bad smell either. I could smell a little hint of the mint coming through.

Both Maui and Emma love these. I can't really tell you that they love them more than any other dental treat we have tried, but they are definitely a hit that is for sure!

Botanical Oils in the Coconut & Botanical Oils Recipe

I was interested to know what potential oils are actually in this recipe so I figured you would be interested as well.

Oils included in the ingredient list are:

  • Coconut oil
  • Sunflower oil
  • Peppermint oil
  • Lemongrass oil
  • Rosemary oil

Other ingredients - Say What?

The ingredient list for these treats is pretty short but there are a couple things in it that pique my curiosity.

One of the ingredients in these First Kisses is "natural flavor". I always hate something generic like that. What actually is "natural flavor"? The natural flavor of what? The natural flavor of  .. Grass? Strawberries? Paper?

If it is something like the natural flavor of strawberries, why don't they just say that? While this may just be a little pet peeve of my own, I don't understand why they just can't list what the natural flavor actually is.

They also list "fruit juice color". Fruit juice color? What in the heck is that and what does that mean? How do you just add the color of a fruit juice? So does that mean they actually do put in artificial color? I'm not sure. While their website says they do not add artificial colors I'm kind of at a loss of what "fruit juice color" may be.

Calorie Content

Is always important to watch the calories you give your dog.

When you give big treats like this they can pack a lot of calories and you definitely have to adjust the amount of mealtime food to give them to compensate for the extra treat calories.

This medium-size coconut and botanical oil Fresh Kisses contains 103 calories per treat.

That is definitely way too many calories for little Emma to get on a regular basis in a snack so I would definitely purchase a smaller size for her in the future.

Both dogs will get a bit of a decrease in their regular food tonight at dinner time to compensate for these extra calories.

Prices and Sizes

The Merrick Fresh Kisses dental chews come in threes size packages that I will call small, medium, and large.

You will get a different number of dental chews per package depending on the treat size that you pick.

For example, if you pick the large package you will get:

  • 16 large-sized chews
  • 22 medium-sized chews
  • 36 small-sized chews
  • 78 extra-small sized chews

Right now the prices on Chewy.com are around:

  • $8.50 for the small package
  • $12.75 for the medium package
  • $25.50 for the large package

Chewy.com has some of the Fresh Kisses packages on sale right now ( prices and special offers are obviously subject to change).

Protective Dog Winter Boots – The Best Thing You Can Do for Your Dog’s Paws

We are deep into winter (at least here in the United States) and us folks up here in the Midwest are cold! We had a strange winter this year. Not a lot of snow like usual but actually rain and freezing temperatures.

Strange weather like this can make for some treacherous walking conditions not only for us humans but for our dogs as well!

Our pup's pads are right on that cold snow and ice. Walking on this can make your dog's feet dangerously cold. Not only that,  the ice can be sharp causing cuts and abrasions. Keeping your dog's paws protected in weather like this is really important so Maui, Emma, and I have put together a list of some great dog winter boots and booties to get you through this cold season.

You can even use them when you're out hiking or on walks in warmer weather to protect your dog's paws from rough terrain, sticks, thorns, hot pavement, etc.

Some boots are designed to give minimal protection to your dog's paws while others are designed to keep your dog's paws dry and more protected from whatever they may step on (kind of like a slipper versus a hiking boot).

Many will be waterproof which means when you get home from that muddy or wet walk your dog's paws are still clean; you just take the boots off and your house stays clean, too!

Maui and it up with some broken toes a few years back and that paws is especially sensitive to the cold. That paw always needs a boot!

Depending on where you live your winters may be harsher or pretty mild so

here are a variety of dog boots and booties to help keep your dog's paws protected and dry.

Water Resistant Boots with Reflective Fastening Straps & Anti-Slip Sole

My Busy Dog brand dog boots are a favorite on Amazon with nearing 2000 reviews. They are also incredibly loved on the My Busy Dog website with 27 reviewers giving these boots 5-star ratings!

They are available in eight different sizes and four different colors (red, orange, black, and green).

What I like about these boots:

  • They have rugged, tough anti-slip soles that will be good during winter or any other season to help prevent damage to your dog's paws from ice, salt, glass, sticks, hot pavement, etc. The soles also provide great traction and stability.
  • The adjustable Velcro straps are reflective, adding an element of safety when it's dark.
  • The front of the boot shaft is split for easy on and off.
  • They are water resistant to help keep your dog's paws warm and dry,
My busy dog dog boots

  • Fabrics used to make these boots are sewn together (not just glued), increasing the quality and life expectancy of your dog's boots.
  • The boots are hand washable. The company recommends fastening the Velcro straps and washing the boots using pet shampoo and leaving them out to air dry. Detergents and other shampoos can be irritating to your dog so using pet shampoo helps make sure any residue that may potentially be left on the boot won't be irritating to your dog's paws.

What I like about the company - if you purchase the boots directly from My Busy Dog (a small U.S. family business) every purchase made on their website helps feed dogs in need.

You can also purchase them on Amazon. Right now the prices the same on Amazon vs. My Busy Dog. but Amazon has a 5 dollar coupon at the moment.

Both websites have easy to understand size charts and directions of how to measure your dog's paw so you purchase the right fit.

The listing does not indicate but reviewers state that the listing is for 4 boots.

Price: $35.99

Anti-slip Waterproof Dog Boots with Reflective Velcro Straps

These QUMY dog boots are a bestseller on Amazon so definitely worth a mention.

They come in 4 sizes and two colors (red and black).

The sizing chart on the Amazon listing makes it seem as though there are 5 sizes but Amazon only lists the four and the QUMY website also only lists four sizes. Guessing they must have discontinued the smallest size.

These boots are:

  • easy to put on and take off with the easily adjustable reflective Velcro straps
  • made with a split seam on the top so the boot can expand to better accommodate your dog's paw
  • made with a rubber anti-slip sole for better traction, stability, and protection
  • waterproof
  • sewn together with high- quality fabrics
  • hand washable

The link below brings you to a listing that is for a set of 4 boots.

QUMY dog boots

Price: $27.99

RoyalCare Boots - Waterproof, Reflective, & Anti-Slip

These boots are available only in black and are available in 3 sizes.

These look pretty similar to the first two options. They are rated well on Amazon but have fewer reviews.

These boots:

  • have a rubber anti-skid sole for better traction and protection.
  • are waterproof
  • have a leather upper
  • are lightweight and breathable
  • conform to your dog's natural paw shape
  • are hand washable
  • have reflective adjustable straps
Royalcare dog boots

The listing has easy to understand instructions how to measure your dog's paw as well as sizing information.

These boots come in a set of four and are just a tad bit less expensive than the first two options.

Price: $23.39 and up (depending on size)

Neo-Paws Dog Boots

Neo-Paws has a few different kinds of boots but I want to highlight two of their winter boot products - the Neoprene Regular Performance Shoe/Boot and the Neoprene Orthopedic High-Performance Outdoor Shoe/Boot.

Neo-Paws is a small Canadian based privately owned business. It specializes in providing high-quality, innovative products for your dog that will keep them safe and comfortable.

Their line of products includes dog life and safety jackets/vests, rain bodysuits, dog seatbelts, performance and orthopedic dog boots/shoes, and a few other items as well.

The Neo-Paws website has great instructions on how to size your dog's feet as well as which size is appropriate.

Neoprene Orthopedic High-Performance Outdoor Boot

These boots are available in black and sizes XS to XXL!

These boots are intended for snow, rain, water sports, and protecting wounds caused by dragging paws.

These boots are not intended for extended indoor use or use in the heat!

I love these boots because:

  • the upper is made out of water-resistant neoprene with water-blocking features
  • the rubber sole is made in a process similar to a human running shoe
  • the rubber covers the entire paw and rises up around the seams (great for keeping out water)
neo-paws high performance dog boot

  • they have a rubber toe cap to protect your dog's toes
  • they are made with a reinforced heel for increased durability

The website indicates these boots are recommended by veterinarians worldwide for dogs with paw injuries, to comfort hip dysplasia, arthritis, and dragging paws (the rubber toe cap and reinforced heel come into play here!)

The website also notes that these particular boots are not recommended for dogs under 15 pounds as the boots will not stay on properly and will likely be too bulky.

These boots come in pairs (so sets of two). They do this since back paws are sometimes smaller than the front, this allows you to purchase two different sizes if needed.

Price: $28.00 - $40.00 per pair (depending on size)

Neoprene Regular Performance Boot

This boot also comes in sizes of XS to XXL and is available in black, pink, blue, red, and green!

The Regular Performance Boot is similar to the Orthopedic Boot but a bit less expensive alternative.

The Regular Performance Boot Differs from the High Performance Boot in that the sole is a bit different and does not provide as much rubber up over and above the seams.

The Regular Performance boot also has:

  • a water-resistant neoprene rubber upper with Aqua-blocking features
  • a sole made from "an injection molded rubber for added strength offering maximum protection and comfort".
  • Specially designed toe cap
  • reinforced heels

These boots are also great for swimming (and protecting your pool liner), running, walking, and for dogs that have dragging paws or hip dysplasia.

These boots are great for rain and snow!

These boots are not intended for indoor use or in the heat.

Price: $25.00 - $34.00 for a pair of 2 (price dependent on size)

neo-paws standard dog shoe boot

Ultra Paws Durable Dog Boots

These dog booties come in black or red and 6 different sizes. They come in a set of 4 booties.

These boots are a bit more flexible than others I mentioned. More of a bootie style rather than having a rubber sole like a shoe or boot.

They are made with water-resistant nylon designed to keep your dog's feet protected in wet, dry, hot, and cold environments.

The toe and sole are coated in what they call 'ToughTek' which is a flexible, grippy, skid resistant, durable thermoplastic.

Ultra paws dog boots

They have:

  • a split seam on the upper shaft of the boot to make them easier to get on and off
  • dual fuzzy fasteners straps
  • foam ankle pads for comfort
  • the grippy sole to help prevent slipping and sliding on tile or hardwood floors

The lowest price I could find on these were at Chewy.com where they are currently having a sale on winter items!

Price: $22.36 to $25.49 four sets of four (price dependent on size).

Dog Boots and Booties

Maui, Emma, and I selected some great options for you to consider when getting ready to make that purchase.

No matter if you give one of our suggested dog boots/booty options a try or some other brand, it's important to keep your dog's paws protected and safe when they are out in the cold or on terrain that could potentially damage their paws.

Thanks so much for stopping by! Maui and Emma say you guys are pawsome and asked if you could check out their Facebook page!

Enjoy the snow!

Can Dogs Get Cold? Yes! Here’s How to Keep Them Warm!

We are deep into winter and the temperatures are chilly to downright frigid!

Some dogs don’t mind the cold; as a matter of fact, some love it! Maui certainly is not an outdoor working type of dog but she loves the cold weather! She will lay outside in the snow any day, no matter what temperature it is out there!

Emma, on the other hand, is just the opposite! She is a 20 pound Rat terrier that does not tolerate the cold well at all. When it gets below 40° outside she's only out there only a minute or two - just long enough to get her business done and she's back at the door wanting to come in.

I certainly can feel her pain; I knew she didn't like the cold but I was really surprised by how severely affected she is by the cold weather.

After an episode about a week ago I wanted Emma to be as warm as possible when she goes outside.

Read on to learn about Emma's episode and some of the most popular and best rated dog coats and sweaters available at reasonable prices!

Do Dogs Get Cold?

You might think dogs don't actually get cold because they have that nice fur coat.

Actually, dogs really do get cold! Dogs are mammals just like we are and we both depend on the environment to help us be warm or cool. Just like humans, some dogs are affected by cold more than others.

Some dogs naturally stay warmer because they have a thick undercoat and/or more fur that helps keep them toasty warm. Maui is a Golden retriever with a very thick undercoat and fur. She goes outside when it's 10° and puts her nose up in the air like it's the best thing ever. She's also a big dog and that helps keep her warmer as well.

Other dogs don't have the undercoat, the amount of fur, and/or the size to keep them warm. They can get dangerously cold outside and believe it or not can even get chilled when they are inside (just like us).

Which Dogs Get Colder?

There are a few factors that influence how comfortable or uncomfortable a dog is when it's cold.

  • Body size
  • Amount of fur and the presence of an undercoat
  • Their acclamation to cold-weather
  • Their age and health

Body Size

In general, smaller dogs will get cold much faster than larger dogs.

The smaller the breed the less body mass they have to help keep them warm.

The smaller breeds and short-legged breeds also have to deal with figuring out how to get through the snow! Having to plow their way through the snow, putting them chest deep (or higher) in snow will cause them to get colder more quickly as well.

Emma is a very lean 20-pound dog. Her legs are long so they keep her up out of the snow a bit but she has no fat on that little body. Definitely not equipped to stay warm in cold weather.

dog in snow

Amount of Fur and Undercoat

This one is a little bit of a no-brainer, but dogs with more fur will stay warmer than dogs with less.

Dogs with an undercoat also stay warmer than dogs without; the undercoat acts as an insulator kind of like the inner layer of our jacket.

As I mentioned, Maui is a Golden retriever and she has a very thick undercoat and just thick fur in general. Cold weather doesn't scare her a bit!

Dogs like Rat Terriers that only have a single layer of thin fur with no undercoat will get cold much more quickly!

Acclamation to Cold-weather

No matter what size your dog is if they are not accustomed to severely cold weather (or even moderately chilly) they will get cold when they are out there!

If a Siberian Husky has grown up and lived in Florida and then moves to Minnesota in the winter, it will not be used to the cold weather and will most likely get cold quicker than you would expect.

Your Dog's Age or Health

Puppies and senior dogs will have a tendency to get colder more quickly.

Dogs with medical conditions or if they're not feeling well will also not be able to tolerate the cold as well.

Emma's Episode

We had some especially frigid weather not too long ago. Of course we have to let our dogs out to go potty and I think Emma waited as long as she could, but finally had to go.

She always does her "quick business" in the closest grass (covered by snow) that she can reach. This time she must have had to do her "other" business because she went trotting around the side of the house.

She was gone for about two minutes (I always wait for her inside the door). She got to the sidewalk about 3 feet from the front door and stopped. She was so cold her legs were shaking as you see in the cartoons. She was shivering so hard and was so cold she couldn't move.

I'm in a wheelchair so I could not go out to get her so I had to try and make her as excited as I could to get her to come into the house. I used my "let's have fun and it's so exciting" voice and tempted her with treats and she finally hobbled and hopped inside the house.

Scared of begeebers out of me! That's when I decided 100% she needed a coat!

Keeping Your Dog Warm Outside

Giving your dog a little extra warmth when they are outside can make that potty run just a little less frigid for them.

I recently spent quite a bit of time shopping around for that coat for Emma and want to share with you some of the most popular; highly rated, and my favorite coats and jackets for dogs so you can help your dog stay warm and cozy well!

Prices of the coats and sweaters vary by size, with the smaller sizes usually costing less than the larger sizes.

Prices will also vary daily so what I have listed here might not be exactly the same as what you see.

PUPTECK Reversible Waterproof Coat

I'm sharing this one with you first because it was my final choice for Emma, is really inexpensive, and fits her perfectly!

This coat comes in sizes ranging from XS to XL. I could swear there was a sizing chart when I purchased Emma's but I can't find it any longer. The Amazon listing indicates a medium measures:  length 16”, neck girth 14-16”, chest girth 20-24”.

There are three color variations:

  • Red & black plaid / black solid
  • Green & blue plaid / blue solid
  • Gray & white plaid / gray solid

The plaid side has a cute pocket where you can put your keys or drivers license for safekeeping if your dog is wearing this when you're out on a walk (Maui says it would be a great place for a snack, too).

This coat is made with polyester fiber filling and has two padded straps with Velcro to fit around your dog - one around the neck and one around the chest.

IREENUO Windproof & Waterproof Jacket with Reflective Strip

This jacket comes in sizes ranging from S to XXXL! When you go to the Amazon listing there is a sizing chart to help you the right size for your dog.

Reviewers on Amazon indicate that they love the jacket but it does tend to run a little small so if you are questioning ordering between two sizes I might opt for the bigger size.

The jacket comes in three colors:

  • Red
  • Blue
  • Black

Each has a reflective strip that goes from hip to hip around the back end.

Warm, water resistant, windproof, breathable, reflective, and machine washable!

Note: the listing indicates the jacket is reversible but after examining several photos it does not look to be.

Price: $20.49 and up (there is a 6% off coupon right now!)

Gooby PULLOVER Stretch Fleece Vest/JACKET

This one comes in sizes ranging from XS to 6X and 15 different colors!

This one is made of fleece and is a pullover style. I initially thought a pullover style would be difficult to get on and off but many reviewers on Amazon indicated it was really easy to get on and off their dog.

The fleece has some stretch so it makes for a comfortable fit and a little leeway if you're not sure which size to get.

The Amazon listing does have a size chart so be sure and check that before you order.

Some folks indicated having a little size trouble because their dog has a big barrel chest. You might want to read through some of the reviews and see what they have to say if your dog has a wide chest.

This cute little jacket is machine washable. Many reviewers indicate they wash it with no troubles (shrinking or pilling).

Price: $12.75 and up

Gooby Bomber Jacket with Stretchable Chest

Comes in sizes  XS to XL and 9 solid colors and 5 plaid colors.

This coat looks super easy to get on and off!

It has a zipper down the back so you just unzip the back; let your dog step into the two leg holes, then zip the zipper back up!

The zipper has a guard to protect against catching your dog's fur in the zipper.

Around the legs and across the bottom underneath the chest is a strategy knit. This gives a little leeway for sizing and makes for a more comfortable fit around the chest.

There is a sizing chart in the Amazon listing so definitely be sure and check that out.

Water resistant, super easy on and off, special leash attachment, warm, and machine washable!

Warm winter jacket for dogs

Price: $25.99  and up

Blueberry Classic Cable Knit Sweater

If your dog is more of a sweater type, this one might be for him!

This sweater comes in multiple sizes. They don't give a letter size but the sizing starts from a back length of 8 inches for the smallest size and a back length of 20 inches for the largest size.

This one also has a sizing chart on the Amazon listing so be sure to reference it before ordering.

The sweater comes in 20 different colors!

The yarn used to make the sweaters is an acrylic/wool blend consisting of 90% acrylic and 10% wool.

It has a cute little turtleneck and is a pullover style sweater.

This sweater is a bit lighter weight so it is not intended for super cold weather.

Machine washable in cold water and dry flat.

Price: $9.99 and up

Hurtta Extreme Warmer Winter Jacket

If you live somewhere that experiences extremely cold weather; do outdoor sports with your dog, or spend a lot of time outside in the winter with your dog this might be the jacket your dog needs!

This one is designed to be extremely warm!

This jacket comes in back lengths ranging from 10 inches to 26 inches and comes in 5 different colors.

This one has some amazing design features to keep your dog warm that other coats and jackets don't have:

  • heat reflective foil lining to help keep your dog warmer
  • extra protection for the neck and chest
  • a warm tricot hood to protect your dogs head and ears
  • a protective rear hem
  • adjustable collar, waist, and back length

These features and superior warmth bring a heftier price tag but if you read reviews on Amazon people really love this cold weather dog jacket!

Price: $88.00 and up

Notes About Sizing

Except for the coat that I purchased for Emma, at the time I am writing this blog all of the others have a sizing chart in the listing. Be sure to check it out because in my shopping I learned that all don't run the same.

You might need a medium in one style and brand but a small in another - kind of like our human jeans (one brand never seems to run the same as another).

Stay Warm and Have Fun

I hope Maui, Emma, and I were able to show you some great cold weather wear that you and your dog like and can find useful.

Emma is not a super fan of getting her jacket on but once it's on, she doesn't seem to mind it and might even appreciate the extra warmth. She hasn't tried to get it off yet so that's a good sign!

Next blog post we will talk about another important winter item for your dog - boots and booties!

Crunchy snow, ice, and excessive cold on the paw pads can be painful and can cause damage. Stay tuned to hear about Maui and Emma's best picks for dog boots and!

Durable Rubber No Squeak Dog Toys by All Kind – Review

After the last toy didn’t work out very well for Maui I thought I’d try a new one for her.  This time I made a point of getting a toy that was a suitable size for a 60 pound Golden retriever!

Toys are always a risky purchase. You think they look fun and entertaining in a store display; a picture; or in a video but when you get that toy home for your dog they just might look at it … and you … like you are crazy for thinking THAT would be fun to play with!

Then again, something you think would never interest your dog (like tiny little cat toys or the little cover of a plastic bottle) grab their interest like it was raw liver! Go figure!

Today Maui and Emma are going to do a review and let you know what they think of the Tug & Fetch No Squeak Tri-Flyer Dog Toy.

Let’s get started and learn about the toy and find out what Maui and Emma think!

Tug & Fetch No Squeak Tri-Flyer Dog Toy

If you’re looking for a good-sized toy to toss around and let your dog tug on this might be a good one for you and your dog!

The blue part is made from durable textured rubber. I think the textured surface makes it easier for your dog and you to hold onto. It gives them something to lock their teeth onto without slipping and gives you some texture to hold onto s that's good o your dog just doesn’t pull the toy right out of your hand.

all kind dog and fetch no squeak tri-flyer dog toy

The orange around the edge is made from durable reinforced Oxford piping for extra durability. Maui likes to chew on the edge and after about three weeks of minimal use (she maybe plays with that for a little bit a couple times a week) I see no damage to the orange piping yet.

The tri-Flyer is designed to help you get a good throw when you toss the toy outside.

It also has a decent weight to it. It’s definitely not a flimsy “your dog pokes it’s tooth through it right away” type of toy.

All Tug & Fetch No Squeak Dog Toys

These toys are all similar in that they have NO SQUEAKERS!

This can really be an asset if you use it as an indoor toy and you enjoy quiet playtime with your dog.

On the other hand, having no squeaker could be a big downer for your dog if they are squeaker fans like Maui and Emma.

It all just depends on your dog and if a toy with no squeaker would be intriguing to them or not.

Tug and Fetch No Squeak Toys do not float! An important thing to know if you are thinking about playing with it at the lake!

Shape and Size Options

The Tug & Fetch No Squeak Dog Toys come in other shapes as well:

  • Tri-Flyer (like Maui’s)
  • Bone
  • Bow
  • Gingerbread man
  • Boomerang

Each is designed with textured rubber surrounded by reinforced Oxford piping.

The tri-flyer, bone, and bow come in sizes of small and large while the gingerbread man and boomerang appear to only come in one size. At least that’s what it is looking like on Chewy.com right now. Perhaps they are running out of some sizes because they have them all on sale right now.

Color Options

Love the options here! They come in a variety of really brightly colored toys including:

  • lime green with red piping
  • red with lime green piping
  • orange with blue piping
  • bright blue with orange piping

I really love that these come in such bright colors; it makes them a little easier to find if you are playing with the toy outside and it ends up getting tossed really far or maybe into the grass.

The bright colors aid in toy rescue!

Super Great Prices

I was excited to get this toy for being part of the Chewy Influencer Program (Chewy provides us with a couple of products in exchange for Maui and Emma’s honest reviews).

I was really hoping it would be a great toy and I could be excited to share with you because the prices on Chewy.com are AWESOME!

Seriously, they are super low for the tug & fetch no squeak toys!

Prices range from $4.99 to $6.99 at Chewy.com!

On top of that several of them are buy one get one free!

Not sure how long the sale will last so. Interested you should pop on over and check them out!

Maui and Emma’s Play Style

Maui and Emma thought very differently about this dog toy.

Emma really had to be coaxed to play with the tri-flyer. Perhaps it was because it is so large to her and it does have a bit of weight to it - possibly. But sometimes I would throw it for her it would be almost like she didn’t even want to acknowledge its existence. The clips in the video are one of the few times we got her to play with it.

Maui, on the other hand, found it to be a fairly fun toy.

Not one of Maui’s all-time favorites (Maui is a big squeaker fan so this did not appeal to her squeak-frenzy mindset) but she enjoyed sitting down with it once in a while over the last three weeks to chew on a bit and toss it around.

She also enjoyed a little fetch with it out in the yard. Keep in mind Maui is not a huge fetcher. Even on an energetic day, she will fetch a toy three or four times and then be done with it. The tri-flyer made it for about three fetches and then Maui was ready to be done.

I consider this toy to be moderately successful for Maui. She has quite a full bin of dog toys and will still pull the tri-flyer out every once in a while to play with it.

What You Should Know

These toys seem fairly durable but were not designed to be a chew toy.

These toys were designed to play fetch and tug.

The manufacturer indicates that these toys are not recommended for aggressive chewers or destroyers. If your dog fits into this description you might want to think about a more chew-centric toy.

And - these toys do not float.

What People Think About the Tug & Fetch No Squeak Toys

Ratings for the Tug and Fetch No Squeak Toys kind of vary depending on the toy.

Looking on Chewy.com at the various shapes and sizes I would estimate that reviews average out to be somewhere around 3.5 out of 5 stars.

The toy shape with the highest reviews and the greatest number of reviews is the small red and green bow -shaped toy (43 reviews giving it an average of 4.1 out of 5 stars). I find this a bit understandable at the shape has ‘handles’ at each and making it really easy for you and your dog to hold onto.

Nature’s Variety Instinct Raw Boost Dog Food Topper Made with Real Raw Meat

Dog food toppers are getting to be quite a big thing in the dog industry!

You can find them in just about any common protein flavor recipe that is common for dogs and they come in different forms such as small soft chunks, gravy, and broths.

I can’t help but think - as a dog it might get boring eating the same food morning and night day after day … after day … after day …

Dog food toppers give you a chance to add variety to your dog’s diet without completely changing their main dog food. It’s kind of like putting your favorite gravy on your mashed potatoes.

As part of the Chewy.com Influencer Program, we had the opportunity to try Instinct Raw Boost Mixers -  dog food toppers made by Nature’s Variety (Chewy provides product to Maui free of charge in exchange for an honest review, and you know Maui is always honest).

Read on to find out if Maui and Emma liked this product!

Nature’s Variety Freeze-Dried Raw Boost Mixers

I was amazed at the variety of flavor recipes available for the Instinct Raw Boost Mixers! Usually, you have about four or five recipe choices but with this dog food topper/mixer you have 9 different flavor and benefit recipes to choose from, all of which are grain-free!

  • Gut Health
  • Immune health
  • Mobility support
  • Beef
  • Chicken

Is Instinct Different Than All the Others?

Instinct believes that dogs should eat as they would in nature. They believe this can be done by feeding real, whole, pure natural raw foods with NO artificial ingredients and NO unnecessary preservatives.

Instinct does not heat their ingredients or diminish the nutrients in the ingredients with unnecessary processing.

Instinct foods are made using Cold Pressure technology also known as High Pressure Processing (HPP). This type of processing does not cook the ingredients and preserves nutrients in the foods.

To maintain nutrition and taste, Instinct creates their RAW foods by starting with frozen raw whole ingredients. They then remove the moisture through Cold Pressure technology which results in freeze-dried 100% raw foods.

Why Instinct Raw Boost Mixers Instead of Raw Meat?

Raw Boost gives you the benefits of feeding raw whole foods to your dog without having to worry about the mess, the time, contamination, and where to store it all!

Raw Boost dog food mixers are soft and dry so there is no mess and it eliminates all of that time you would need to cut up raw meat. They come in compact resealable bags so they take up very little room on your shelf (so they take up no space your fridge or freezer).

The bag of raw boost mixers we received a couple weeks ago indicates it is best if used by May 30, 2020! They have such a long shelf life because all moisture has been removed so the raw ingredients and nutrients are far less likely to go bad.

Special Benefit Raw Boost Mixers

Three of the Raw Boost Mixers dog food toppers are formulated to provide certain nutrients to benefit your dog’s overall gut or immune health or mobility.

Maui would have been happy trying anyone of the flavor recipes but I chose the mobility support because I wanted to learn what about that recipe could be beneficial to dogs perhaps experiencing age-related aches and pains and arthritis.

I'm not sure the amount we feet of the special recipes will really have a  dramatic positive effect but I feel any little bit can help especially if your pup is suffering with painful joints, intestinal issues, and/or health problems.

Mobility Support Recipe

This recipe formulation indicates it provides natural glucosamine and chondroitin to help support healthy joints and hips.

Highlighted ingredients in this recipe are:

  • Flaxseed
  • New Zealand green-lipped mussel
  • Turmeric
  • Fenugreek

Natural glucosamine comes from the hard outer shell of crustaceans and mussels. It also comes from a few other food sources such as beef trachea, chicken feet, pigtails or oxtails, beef knuckle bones, other cartilage-rich bones, a nice homemade bone broth, and yes, green-lipped mussels.

The other highlighted ingredients are all known to help decrease inflammation.

So, all good stuff for helping to improve mobility.

Gut Health Recipe

It comes as no surprise to me that the gut health recipe includes the dog superfood pumpkin. (To learn more about why pumpkin is a dog superfood read my article about it HERE.)

Ingredients highlighted in this recipe are all known to help promote overall gut health and include:

  • Pumpkin
  • Sweet potato
  • Chicory root
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Probiotics

Immune Health Recipe

Functional ingredients that make this recipe great for immune health are:

  • Beets - high in vitamin C & folate
  • Flaxseed - good source of iron (helps transport oxygen in the body)
  • Kelp - multiple great effects including detoxification, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and improves digestive health
  • Blueberries - high in vitamin K, vitamin C, potassium, manganese, and antioxidants
  • Cranberries - antioxidants and an anti-inflammatory benefits

How to Feed Raw Boost Mixers

The bag indicates to add ¼ cup to your dog’s food if they weigh up to 20 pounds (that’s Emma size) and ¾ cup to the food for dogs weighing 41 to 60 pounds (that’s Maui size).

The Mobility Support recipe says ¾ of a cup has 232 calories! That’s quite a lot of extra calories so to compensate for those extra calories I cut back Maui (and Emma’s) regular kibble to about ¾ of what they usually get.

I just sprinkled the Raw Boost Mixer on top of Maui and Emma’s regular dry kibble.

You will probably want to cut back on your dog’s regular food as well. That way they will get about the same amount of calories and be less prone to eating too much and gaining weight. Although, if you just feed the mixers once in a while and it is not a regular thing, you probably don’t need to worry about the calories and weight gain too much.

Taste Testing Instinct Raw Boost Mixers

How Much Do You Get?

The Specialty Recipe Instinct Raw Boost Mixers and the Raw Boost Mixers Blends come in 5.5-ounce bags.

The straight-up beef, chicken, lamb, and turkey recipes come in a variety of sizes - 5.5, 6, and/or 14-ounce bags.

The mobility support bag indicates it contains twenty 1/8 cup servings. Look at the serving diagram on the bag –

1/8 of a cup isn’t even on the list. I consider this to be a bit deceptive - but maybe I'm just sensitive.

If I were to feed only Maui the recommended amount of ¾ cup each time, this 5.5-ounce bag would be enough for 3.3 servings.

If I were to feed Emma the recommended amount of ¼ cup, the bag would be enough for 10 servings.

Don’t get me wrong, I love their raw mixers; I just don’t love that they are trying to make you think you will have more servings than you actually will (unless your dog weighs about 10 pounds).

Another Great Way to Use Raw Boost Mixers

If you have a large dog like I do, feeding the Raw Boost Mixers on a regular basis would get pretty expensive. Once in a while as a special dinner treat - yes, but every day - nope.

A lot of people who left reviews on Amazon and Chewy indicated they liked to use the Raw Boost Mixers as treats! I love this idea!

Using the mixers as treats your dog will still get the benefits of the raw diet but your 5.5-ounce bag will last you much longer!

Lowest Prices and Where to Get It

Nature’s Variety and Instinct can be found at most pet stores including privately owned, smaller chains, and large chains like PetSmart and PetCo.

Prices for the 5.5 ounce bags are pretty stable across the board. Here are the lowest prices I could find for Nature’s Variety Instinct Raw Boost Mixers 5.5-ounce bag –

Maui & Emma’s Final Review of Instinct Raw Boost Mixers Mobility Support Recipe

Nature's variety instinct raw boost mixers review

I let Maui and Emma try these first as a treat. It's always interesting when they try something new; you can tell by the look in their eyes and how quickly they sit for another how much they like what you give them.

Emma went a little bit bananas after she tried one piece. She didn't know whether to bounce around (she's quite a jumper) or to try and sit for another. Once I asked her to sit her little rear end hit the floor pretty darn fast! She couldn't get enough of them!

Maui is always a bit calmer for treats. She knows the drill - sit or follow a command and treats will be given. She absolutely loved these as well and her rear stay planted to the floor anticipating the next piece!

Let us know if you tried these  Raw Boost Mixers!

Maui and Emma absolutely love them and want to know if your dog does too!
